Come summertime, East Coasters flock to New Jersey’s beaches and boardwalks. For travelers hoping to catch some sun or stroll along the Jersey Shore, it can be tough to pick which stretch of sand to visit. Based on factors like accessibility, amenities and cleanliness, as well as the opinions of travelers and experts, U.S. News determined the best New Jersey beaches. We want your feedback, so be sure to vote for your favorite sandy spots below. (Note: Many beaches in New Jersey require a “beach tag” for access.

Stone Harbor

#1 in Best New Jersey Beaches

With miles of soft sands and an easygoing atmosphere, Stone Harbor appropriately bills itself as “The Seashore at its Best.” Stone Harbor’s Seven Mile Beach, which it shares with the neighboring Avalon, offers pristine sands and dedicated spots for taking catamarans and kayaks out on the water. Meanwhile, Stone Harbor Point conservation area is perfect for exploring unspoiled shoreline, bird-watching and fishing. Though Stone Harbor doesn’t have a bustling boardwalk like other New Jersey locales, this quaint town on the Jersey Cape features several galleries and shops to peruse.

Cape May

#2 in Best New Jersey Beaches

Located on the southern tip of New Jersey, Cape May is known for its colorful 19th-century architecture, oceanfront dining options and some of the East Coast’s best beaches. With about 2.5 miles of coastline, there is truly a stretch of sand for everyone. Cape May visitors can set up a beachfront picnic, play some beach volleyball at Steger Beach or Second Avenue Beach, hang 10 at popular surfing spots like The Cove or simply enjoy a day of solitude and relaxation along the promenade. Don’t leave without watching the sun go down at Sunset Beach, which offers unobstructed views.

Manasquan

#3 in Best New Jersey Beaches

Manasquan’s mile-long beach along the northern coast features calm water and soft sand, perfect for idling away the day with a good book. But should you grow restless, one of New Jersey’s best surf spots is located at the Manasquan Inlet. What’s more, there are plenty of restaurants just steps from the beach when hunger strikes. If you’ve brought your four-legged friend, head to the 55-acre Fisherman’s Cove Conservation Area. Part of the park is dog-friendly, and it also offers a beach that’s ideal for fishing, observing wildlife or wading through the shallow waters.

Point Pleasant Beach

#4 in Best New Jersey Beaches

When in the borough of Point Pleasant Beach (just south of Manasquan), visit its shoreline of the same name to enjoy kayaking and strolling along the warm sand. The tide can often be too rough to swim, so you can only take a dip when lifeguards are on duty. Visitors should also spend some time on Jenkinson’s Boardwalk, which has a family-friendly beach (open seasonally), miniature golf, amusement park rides and various eateries, including an old-school sweet shop and a gourmet pizza joint. Before you go, take note of parking and beach restrictions; beach tents and other items are not allowed, nor are pets.

Long Branch

#5 in Best New Jersey Beaches

Once designated as the nation’s “Summer Capital” in the late 1800’s, Long Branch in northern New Jersey is now an upscale destination for beachgoers. Long Branch’s main draw is Pier Village, which features a boardwalk, luxury residences, shops and restaurants, as well as a lively nightlife scene. Meanwhile, the 38-acre Seven Presidents Oceanfront Park is the place to be for sun-seekers and surfers alike. This beach offers something for everyone, with well-maintained amenities like a volleyball area, a snack bar, an accessible playground and a skate park.
