The Vicksburg National Military Park contains the remains of the Civil War battle of Vicksburg, which lasted from March 29 to July 4, 1863. The Vicksburg Campaign, which preceded the battle, is also commemorated on the grounds of the park in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Check out the top 3 attractions you must not miss when visiting the Vicksburg National Military Park.
USS Cairo Gunboat and Museum
This one-of-a-kind authentic ironclad gunboat is pronounced CAY-roh after the Chicago city. Just over 100 years after it sank in the Yazoo River, a boat was salvaged from the bottom.
The gunboat lay forgotten for decades on the bottom of the river, buried in the mud and silt, leaving only speculations of its whereabouts and scattered tales. We invite you to step aboard this magnificent example today, which still retains its original armor, steam engines, pilothouse, and cannons. There are no similar vessels in the world.
Illinois Memorial and Shirley House
Once you drive through the main entrance arch and down the wooded road you’ll see a hilly battlefield landscape dotted with rotundas and surrounded by hills. Illinois Memorial, modeled after the Roman Pantheon, is a “temple of fame” for the 74 infantry, 20 artilleries, and 22 cavalry units that were sent to Vicksburg.
In the same neighbourhood is the Creole cottage-style Shirley House, also known as the White House when Union soldiers used it as an observation post. Originally built in 1837, and later purchased by Judge James Shirley, this house miraculously survived the siege. A lucky bullet saved the house from being destroyed by Confederates. The house is the only surviving building from wartime on the park grounds.
The Art of Commemoration
